  2.                           ABOUT BOBCAT
  3.              (BOB's CATalog of computer information)
  4.  
  5. BOBCAT is for anyone using micro-computers in business.  Anyone
  6. that has a need to quickly get specific information - 
  7. without having to read through hundreds of publications.
  8.  
  9. BOBCAT is a computerized INDEX, a data base.  It will tell you
  10. where to quickly find the product reviews, tutorials, general
  11. articles, buying guides, ads on new or special products, etc.,
  12. that are published in leading magazines, news letters, newspapers
  13. and research reports.
  14.  
  15. If you do not have access to the publications where the
  16. information is, and you need it immediately, for personal study
  17. or research, phone us for SAME DAY PHOTO COPY SERVICE.

  19. Actually, most of the listings are useful to anyone, it's just
  20. that we don't index information on games, educational or lab
  21. applications, and "heavy hacking or programming".
  22.  
  23.     Each edition of BOBCAT contains approximately 1500
  24. plus entries from approximately 200 publications.  The 7th 
  25. and 8th characters of the BOBCAT file name (BOBCAT01.DTA)
  26. indicate the edition number.

  29.                         HOW TO USE BOBCAT
  30.  
  31.     The BOBCAT data files are intended to be used with 
  32. Jim Button's PC File III program.  The files BOBCAT.HDR,
  33. BOBCAT.INX and BOBCAT.KEY should be on the same disk as 
  34. BOBCAT.DATA.  BOBCAT.DATA is loaded and run win the same 
  35. way as any other PC-FILE III data file.  If you need any 
  36. help, refer to the PC-FILE III documentation.

  38.     You can get your copy of PC-FILE III by sending a 
  39. diskette and a self-addressed stamped mailer to:

  45.     When using more than one edition of BOBCAT it may be 
  46. worth your while to clone off separately the different categories 
  47. from each disk and merge each category on one disk.

  49.     Study the Subject Word/Category Matrix (not on disk).  
  50. This shows the categories and main subject words that are used 
  51. with each category.  Categories F, P, and R are used only if a 
  52. listing doesn't fit one of the other categories. As a general 
  53. rule, use the first category that clearly fits, as you come to 
  54. it, in the Subject/Word Matrix.

  56.     Only upper case is used to simplify searching.
  57.  
  58.     Use Soundex (?) or Scan (>) when on doubt.
  59.  
  60.     Categories F, P, or R may turn up lost items.
  61.  
  62.     Search for NOVICE in MISC. field.
  63.  
  64.     *  - a star means additional information is in the
  65.          MISC field.
  66.  
  67.     To identify the publication referred to in BOBCAT, 
  68. use the file MAG.DTA.  The field FILE refers to the 
  69. publication.

  71.       The documentation, CROSS-REFERENCE and the SUBJECT
  72. WORD/CATEGORY matrix are not included on the disk. It is felt
  73. BOBCAT can be used reasonabley well used without them, certainly
  74. well enough to determine if BOBCAT will be of sufficient value
  75. to warrant a contribution.

  79. 1. No changes are allowed in distributed copies.

  81. 2. All files must be copied and distributed together.

  100. 3. SUBJECT WORD/CATEGORY matrix.

  102.                      -------- Categories and meanings of
  103.    words as used in the computer industry are oft times 
  104.    ambiguous and shifting.  For example, a print spooler can 
  105.    either be a hardware item or a software function, or is it
  106.    a printer buffer?  The SUBJECT WORD/CATEGORY MATRIX, when
  107.    used together with the CROSS REFERENCE will help solve this
  108.    problem - and help you understand how BOBCAT is structured.
